Featured Projects: Education
At Solica we understand the special care higher education construction requires. Our primary focus is to deliver excellent results while ensuring the safety and security of the students and staff. Our expertise allows us to work successfully and efficiently on complex and challenging education projects while staying on time and within budget. In order to best serve an educational environment, we work closely with the client to minimize campus disruptions by coordinating the project’s scheduling around the students’ movements, building activities, and calendar. We have completed projects for Wright State University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University, Cincinnati State, and Indiana Tech.
Dayton Metro Libraries
2015
Key Challenge: Due to the building sitting alongside the canal, the structural system shifted so there were surprise structural issues that came up. Some supporting walls were out of plum, structural slab had deteriorated, and supporting brick arches had started to crumble.
Project Description: This project is a dynamic transformation of a 100 year-old brewery into the main operating center for the Dayton Metro Libraries system of 16 libraries. Solica was the lead general contractor working together with SKANSKA as the owner’s rep. 80,000 square feet building sitting alongside the historic canal. We completed a full interior restoration and including a four story metal panel stairway addition. Solica removed 2,000 s.f. historic concrete slab and relayed it partnering with a local concrete supplier, Metcon. All four floors transitioned to a completely modern feel and finishes while also maintaining historic integrity with original beams and vintage-look windows.
Indiana Tech

Key Challenge: Solica was challenged on this project by a highly limited time line due to the scheduling requirements of Indiana Tech. We worked to manage the project effectively and efficiently, allowing us to complete the project two weeks early. Not only did Solica manage to turn a gray box into a high-end educational finish, but we did so while also giving Indiana Tech time to spare in order to better prepare for the upcoming school year.
Project Description: Solica Construction was brought in to perform a 4,700 SF full tenant finish out for Indiana Tech. The project scope included large computer labs, multiple classrooms, offices, and administrative space. Solica worked closely with the Indiana Tech staff to design the space in a way that would facilitate the learning and growth of Indiana Tech’s students. Solica’s proactive communication ensured that Indiana Tech would receive a building which furthered their goals as an institution and enhanced the experience of everyone involved.
Cincinnati State Administration Offices - “Triangle Project”

Key Challenge: The most difficult part of this project was trying to juggle three different office groups and their unique needs and move schedules. We were lucky to work with a knowledgeable and collaborative construction lead team at Cincinnati State who enabled direct communication and flexible scheduling whenever possible.
Project Description: Solica was the lead general contractor coordinating the office renovations of three different executive offices within the campus, hence the name, “The Triangle” project. The scope changes included demolition and rebuilding walls, changing all interior wall, floor, and ceiling finishes as well as doors, frames, and hardware, and some MEP as well. Our own carpentry, finishing, and painting team helped us deliver on the time schedule. They were dedicated to excellence in their quality and cooperative to work weekends and second and third shifts when needed to complete the work. The antiquated finishes from the early 90s were updated to reflect the modern, open design theme of the new Cincinnati State campus.
